I did this a while back for a website that was in production. I designed the character from the design of the logo and roughed out three poses. The idea was that his "yoga" poses would guide the user on the site. I was excited to keep going with it but the project got cancelled. Oh and I put yoga in quotes cuz im not sure how accurate the poses were. It was all early on in the development stage.

I've started the actual pages for my NRD comic. This is the very first panel from page one. I did the first three pages straight to make sure my process wouldn't become an issue and so far so good. I might go back and retouch certain elements once I get farther along since I will probably be looser with my inking and more familiar with the characters. Im also tweaking the dialogue a bit. On to comic making...

NRD - a short comic book story

I've announced on twitter that I'm working on a short story for a Comic book anthology that should come out later this year. I've written out a draft of the script and have done the layouts for all the pages. Im currently working on getting the dialogue of the script finalized and starting on the actual pages. Above is the cast of my story, which is based off of a submission story to a non-profit organization that helps kids deal with bullying. Nothing better than doing comics for a good cause. The story is tentatively titled NRD.

I've been wanting to post this since sunday when he scored both goals in the win against Bolivia in the Copa America but the first sketch I did lacked a little bit of motion and spirit. So I attacked it again last night and was happier with the results. Our current goal scorer, Radamel Falcao. Hope he gets into true form like he does at Porto.

After watching yesterday's performance of Colombia in the copa america vs argentina, I realized something. That even though im not the biggest fan of our current coach, we do have some very noteworthy players that get overshadowed by our as of late, poor track record. So i got inspired to sketch one of those players Juan Camilo Zuñiga, currently playing club football at Napoli. His style of game reminds me a lot of Roberto Carlos. Very capable defender that can cause serious damage to the offense when running down the flank. So here's a nod to Los Cafeteros and to Zuñiga

Brush and ink vs Manga Studio 4

Heres a little behind the scenes at piece I worked on of Atom Eve. The last two images are a comparison of traditional inking versus digital inks. My crappy scanner was not quite capturing the quality I wanted of the traditional inks so I decided to pull out the ol manga studio to ink with. Ive had the program but hadn't messed with it since getting a cintiq. Suprisingly, I really liked inking with it. I treated it like traditional inking and ended up happy with the results.
I finished it up in Illustrator and actually changed the near hand which looked hella messed up on the ink versions.

What up world! Hope everyone had a great end of the year. I'm kicking off 2011 with a sketch done for a sketchblog by floyd county artists. You may know us as the group that brings you all the FX animated show Archer (which premiers Jan 27 by the way. plug plug). I slept on getting this done because of all the festivities of the end of the year, so all I could do was a sketch. Hopefully ill get some time to finish it off. Somehow I'm trying to fit mural making into my schedule. I've done two murals before, but they were free-form and kinda spur of the moment. This time Im actually planning it out somewhat, which means sketching it BEFORE drawing on the wall. Here is the sketch as well as some quick photoshop mocks of what it might look like. The colors will probably be different, since I'm thinking of picking up "oops" paint at my local Home Depot. So whatever they got I'm taking. Leaving that to chance! I'm a wild man.
Oh and in case its hard to make out, the letters say Live/Love.

I did a sketch as a warm up one day and it inspired me into making a pinup of sorts. Here is the original sketch, digital sketch, tighter pencils, and inks. Inks on vellum, pencils on Bristol. I love inking on vellum and I’ve been messing around with it the last couple of days. Since my stuff isn’t painterly or with a lot of texture, I have found that I like to work on surfaces with smooth finishes. And it don’t get smoother than vellum. Like a baby’s butt! My sister, my brother, and I LOVED animaniacs. We watched it religiously. Also, my sister and I broke my brothers arm when we were little by deciding to throw him over a couch while still holding on to his arm. Naturally, for my sister’s birthday, I decided to combine both memories in a card. Love ya sis!

Wonder Woman Pin up Cover

I decided to go ahead and not only ink but also color the Wonder Woman sketch I did a couple weeks back. It felt so good to be working in colors since lately the majority of my time has been spent storyboarding in black and white. I think I might go back and change some of the black ink lines to color but for now Im just going to leave it as is. I did the whole thing in Illustrator CS4, which in my opinion, is the best illustrator yet. The new pen tool, the blob tool, and the new gradient tool have me sweatin this program majorly. Highly recommend it. Also sorry about the annoying watermark but I think I might start doing it with my work from now on. A fellow illustrator on twitter was unlucky to have someone swiping his art and making money off of it on a stock image website. Grr... so now my paranoid self is going to stamp my work with a big fat CAICEDO ILLUSTRATION. Take that bitters!

Im a Manchester City fan but there is no denying the talent behind this man. I did this illustration for one of my co-workers who happens to be the nicest Manchester United fan Ive ever met. He was nice enought to get me some City gear which included the most beautiful scarf I have ever owned. So as a token of my appreciation here is the sketch and final illustration. I changed the drawing a little right before I colored it so the rough looks a little different. Also , im now thinking of doing a whole series of City players in the same style.

I signed up for the APW Gallery show in NY entitled "World of Imagination 3" back in the fall of 09. I had planned on doing 5 pieces for the show but because of work and other duties, I was only able to do two. I then proceeded to mess up one of the two pieces I did which, as you can imagine, left me kicking myself for trying to experiment at the least opportune time. On a positive tip,I feel like the piece I got in was the most effective of the two in conveying my idea for the pieces. I wish I could have done more but I'm happy that I was able to get something in. This is the sketch and the final I turned in.

Story boarding is fun but it has completely consumed me. Now that I'm starting to get a better grasp of time management, I'm trying to get back into working on revamping my site and portfolio. Here's the promo that has been airing on FX for the new show Archer. I'm one of two storyboard artists for the show. Some of the beginning is part of the pilot episode for which I was still working on as Illustrator. I helped out with the turtleneck sequence by drawing the bodies and the duffel bag, including the zip line scene. Can't wait to find out the premier date to announce it to the world!

For those that may not know, I work at a studio in Atlanta that is FILLED with talented artists. So many artists in such a small space (sort of) that all our creative juices makes the place get hot as hell. Literally. I'm blessed to be working amongst all these other creatives and I've decided that I would start going around and hitting people up for collab work. I did this sketch of beast boy, which I've sent off to get inked by a co-worker, and now I'm anxiously waiting to get it back at a whole nother level. Ill post the inks when I get them with a link to the artist (if they permit) and hopefully pass it off to another coworker for the color drops. Im thinkin this lil' collab-projects idea of mine is gonna turn out hella interesting and hopefully kick some major creative juices into hyper-drive.

Drawing all week at work on the nice and spacious Cintiq has rekindled my love for my ol' school wacom tablet at home. Im starting to sketch digitally more, trying to layout my sketches as i would on a physical sketchbook: in the most random and weird ways. I guess that's reflective of the spurts of creativity. Also, im trying to leave the little thumb nails and doodles that also appear on my actual sketchbooks. I think there is something to be said in all this digital sketches vs. physical sketches dilema, but I think that's another blog post for another day.

I'm working on re-building my portfolio. I just got tired of seeing most of the stuff I have up. So I started with a portrait of Pac. This is my first run at the colors. I'm going to show it around and see what feedback I get. I definitely want to do something about the back of his neck and I'm still not sure about the floating head. How will it turn out? Who knows. The suspense keeps me up at night.

The Last Air bender

Figures. Only I would get interested in a show when the show's supposed final season has ended. My younger cousins recently got me into Avatar, an amazing show about an airbender (look it up in wikipedia, too complicated to explain) named Aang who is the new reincarnated version of the avatar, set out to save the world from the evil Fire Nation. How did I miss this? I guess not being much of a nickelodeon fan probably explains my ignorance to this well crafted animation. Its a crazy amazing show that mixes incredible fight scenes with a well rounded story. Having watched the entire first season this last week (and the second during the weekend), I decided to sketch up a little bit older version of aang in my style. I can't say this show has not been inspiring. Im over here actin like a little kid, going around bending everything. Its only a matter of time before "pillow" bending attacks start to get annoying to those around me.
